T-Mobile Motorola Motoroi rumors still afloat

Remember those Sholes tablet rumors we have been reporting on since last year? Motorola finally launched their Droid-minus-keyboard overseas as the Motoroi XT720 in South Korea and the XT701 in China, but the form factor has yet to make it to the United States.

Our sources told us this device was supposed to launch on T-Mobile USA earlier this year, but it failed to materialize and it looks like Motorola went back to the drawing board to beef up the specs.

Now Pocket-lint is reporting that Motorola has confirmed a variant of the Motoroi design will be coming to the UK this year, but with even better features. The new handset should include Android 2.1 with Motoblur, 8 megapixel camera with xenon flash, play back and record 720p video, mini HDMI connector, and an unnamed processor.

Motorola has been using a 550 MHz Texas Instruments OMAP3430 in all their high-end Android phones so far. This processor might not have the higher clock speeds of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon, but it’s still based on the same ARM Cortex-A8 core.

At this time, it is unclear which platform Motorola will use next. They could opt for the next generation OMAP4 which features a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9, but it might be too soon to see those CPUs in a smartphone this year. Motorola currently uses Qualcomm chips in their mid-range Android lineup, so a more likely successor could be something from the Snapdragon family.

Motorola plans to launch at least 20 smartphones this year and expects to ship 12 million to 14 million units, so they still have a lot of ground to make up. Verizon is expected to get a follow up to the Droid this Christmas, but look for T-Mobile USA to get their own exclusive high-end Android phone from Moto later this year.

What processor and features would you like to see Motorola use in their next high-end Android device?
